APPLICATIONS

Six established directions
and one frontier track

The list below follows the application areas published by Ferrotec for the EMG series, plus the EFH demonstration line. If your use case is not here, describe it — we will tell you honestly whether ferrofluid fits.

Magnetic domain observationThe classic Bitter method: a drop of ferrofluid on a polished surface outlines domain walls under a microscope. Water-based low-viscosity grades are commonly used.
Sensing, damping and sealingA ferrofluid held by a magnet in a gap acts as a liquid O-ring: it seals, damps and can transmit pressure signals while remaining a liquid. Oil-based grades are typical for long-term installations.
Actuators and valvesPosition control and miniature valves where a liquid must be moved or held by a field without mechanical parts.
In-vitro diagnostics and biomedical researchMagnetic nanoparticle powder or water-based grades for separation, enrichment, magnetic bead preparation, magnetic targeting and magnetic hyperthermia studies.
Material separationMagnetically tagging a target phase and pulling it out of a mixture; used in mineral processing research and waste-stream recovery studies.
Demonstration, exhibits and STEMEFH1 and EFH3 in display bottles: spike formation, magnet-controlled spheres, museum and teaching installations. Not intended for loudspeaker voice coils — ask us about that separately.
Boundary you should know before you design Ferrofluid is a response material, not a force material. It does not transmit meaningful torque. If your design needs 50–100 kPa of yield stress, you need magnetorheological fluid (MRF), which is a different product and not one we supply.
